ST: Chapter 1- Beginning (Part 1)

Seriously?

Hae Ga-jun stood there thinking blankly at the scene unfolding before his eyes. The potato that had been chewed gave off a savoury aroma in his mouth, but he couldn’t even finish chewing it.

He checked his location again of where he was standing, looked around, and tried to look for ‘it’ again, but he couldn’t find it in his field of vision. Even after taking off his glasses and looking for it, the scene remained unchanged.

“The bus has left…?”

The words that he managed to speak sounded like sighs that entered his ears and took a few seconds to register in his mind. It meant that there was a problem with Ga-jun’s cognitive processing functions.

The bus has left.

To explain it a little further, the bus for the school trip has left.

To explain the situation in a little more detail, on the way to the school field trip, he got off at a rest stop and excitedly went to buy sweet potatoes and some other snacks. But it took a while because there were so many people waiting, and it only felt as if they all shared a warm sense of camaraderie, saying that everyone was hungry and only knew how to eat. And finally, when he bought some sweet potatoes, as a reward when he returned, the bus had already left.

Ga-jun rubbed his eyes again, denying reality. With one hand, he quickly fumbled through his pocket to reach for his cell phone. Of course, he did not forget to carefully secure the potatoes in his arms with his other hand so that they did not fall. However, Ga-jun quickly realized one thing.

He secured the potatoes, but had not secured his cell phone…

“Ah, I left it back.”

As soon as he had arrived at the rest area, he got off with just his wallet, and this unfortunate incident had occurred. Right now, his cell phone is probably safely kept in his bag, left behind on the bus seat. He thought the kids around him would be tired of him looking at his phone, but they must have wanted this crisis.

Ga-jun teared up. Although he reflected on his own carelessness, what was even more absurd was the teacher and the class president. Just because they could not see anyone missing there in his seat, they set off without properly counting the number of people?* They did say that he had been sleeping curled up the whole time in his seat, but wasn’t this too much?

*[T/N: Ga-jun kept a bag on his seat before getting off and keeping a bag on your seat means no vacancy, so it was said that they assumed no one was missing and that he was in the bus somewhere.]

As he was munching on a potato to appease his absurd resentment and self-blaming, he vaguely caught sight of someone slowly approaching from a distance. Only after he had slightly narrowed his eyes could he see the other’s appearance more clearly and accurately.

The white twisted knitwear added a serene and neat vibe to his presence, and the black pants hugged the straight legs around to make them stand out. The appearance of his brown hair swaying in the light breeze on an autumn day was like that of a student model, and Ga-jun was convinced.

To be precise, the way he looked in Ga-jun’s direction and looked around in confusion gave Ga-jun confidence.

“Baek Seon-woo?”

“…Ga-jun? The bus…”

Although it was just a few words that only came out as a topic of conversation, Ga-jun understood everything and immediately became cheerful.

Ah, I’m not the only one who has been left behind.  I wasn’t the only idiot.

A feeling of relief enveloped his entire body and the tension eased away.

Baek Seon-woo is in the class next to him, but even so, rather than the words spreading as ‘Ga-jun was the only one who failed to go on the field trip’ throughout the school, it would be better for people to use the word ‘they…’

Moreover, if the target was Baek Seon-woo, he’d feel even more reassured. If that’s the case, there’s no way people would dare to talk about it easily.

Ga-Jun watched with a generous heart as Baek Sun-woo felt embarrassed. Baek Seon-woo and he were in the same class in the first grade, so although they weren’t close friends, they knew each other in their own way.  Of course, Ga-jun didn’t remember having much conversation after the class got divided, but now he felt a very special bond with Seon-woo.

Moreover, he was even more glad to see Baek Sun-woo because he would now have a solution to this problem. He was like a saviour who would put an end to this foolish situation.

“Did the bus really already leave?”

“I guess so, so let’s hurry and call. Your cell phone?”

“It just got broken a little while ago…”

Turns out he wasn’t a saviour.

“WHAT? NO, WHY? HOW COME?!”

“I dropped it while passing by that pond over there…”

The cell phone that Baek Seon-woo handed over had a long vertical crack, and purple and pink lines of broken LED were crackling around the broken screen. It clearly showed that the screen was dead and so was the phone.

Seon-woo didn’t have to go to this length to show his phone to prove his statement this badly. Ga-jun looked down at the phone with hopelessness in his eyes.

Baek Seon-woo seemed to have taken his time to gather the broken parts of his cell phone. Ga-jun sighed while looking around the deserted parking lot, and suggested for them to go inside the rest area for now. He had no choice but to borrow a cell phone from an employee and contact the others.

Ga-jun approached the store where he bought the sweet potatoes, explained the situation briefly, and borrowed a cell phone from a friendly employee. Ga-jun paused for a moment, looking at the screen.

“Do you know the teacher’s number?”

“No…”

“Um, since I don’t know either, I guess I have to call the school.”

“Do you know the contact number of the school?”

“What do you mean… I’ll just have to search for it.”

After having an extremely natural conversation, Ga-jun turned on the internet and searched for the name of their school. Since his cell phone was always set to silent, calling on his was useless.
